A Tale's Tail

  1. A TALE'S TAIL - A black ink and black color pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size coquille board. It appears in the book, "Iced On Aran," by Brian Lumley, published by Ganley in 1992.

I met British author Brian Lumley at a regional Fantasy Convention that took place sometime in the early 1990s in Buffalo, NY, hosted by Paul Ganley of Ganley Press. Lumley was the Author Guest of Honor, I was the Artist Guest of Honor. As "Guests of Honor" we were part of the program and were assigned a time slot in which to give a lecture dealing with our profession followed by a question and answer period. We were also assigned the task of judging the best costumes at the convention.

There are some people you meet that shake your hand, smile politely, and that's it, there seems to be nothing you have in common to talk about. But meeting Brian Lumley for the first time was like meeting an old friend, we chatted about things in an easy manner as if we' known each other for years. I had the pleasure of illustrating several of his books that were published by Ganley Press.

I also remember another thing about our meeting, Lumley brought a woman with him to the convention, from England. He introduced her to my wife and I as his mate, "Lovey," a beautiful woman who was just as nice and easy to talk to as Brian was.

After the convention they went back to England and I never saw them again. But I will always remember Brian Lumley and his mate, Lovey.
